X Launches Upgraded Chat with End-to-End Encryption and Video Calls

X has officially launched Chat, a major upgrade to its private messaging system, transforming the traditional DM into a fully encrypted communication platform. The new Chat feature offers end-to-end encryption for all messages and files, ensuring that only the conversation participants can access the content. Additional features include video calls, voice calls, self-deleting messages with custom timers, and support for sending large files. Chat is now available on iOS and the web, and all existing messages will automatically migrate to the new system.
Designed to compete with messaging apps like Signal and Telegram, X Chat does not require a phone number to connect and supports both private and group chats with full encryption. However, X notes that some metadata, such as timestamps and recipients, is not encrypted, which could be accessible in certain cases. Users must set a four-digit PIN on first use to enhance security.
Currently, Chat does not include message or device authentication, which may leave it vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks, including by insiders. X has acknowledged this limitation and plans to introduce authentication tools in the future so users can verify that conversations remain secure.
Additional notable features include screenshot notifications, the ability to disable screenshots entirely, message editing and deletion, and instant voice and video calls directly within the chat. Voice notes are also in development, further expanding Chat into a complete communication hub.
X originally tested encrypted DMs in 2023 but paused the feature in May 2025 for system improvements. The launch of Chat is the result of this upgrade, bringing all enhanced messaging capabilities into a unified platform. Android users will gain access shortly, as X confirms it is coming soon. This launch strengthens X’s position as a privacy-focused everything app, offering seamless and secure communication.
Overall, Chat not only modernizes DMs but also reinforces X’s stance as a safe messaging platform. While some vulnerabilities remain, continuous development ensures users can expect more secure and feature-rich interactions on X in the near future.
