Pokémon now outnumbers elementary school kanji in Japan

A viral post from Japan recently sparked discussion online after pointing out an interesting comparison between the number of creatures in Pokémon and the number of kanji characters Japanese students learn in elementary school.

According to a Japanese educator known online as sensei_to_met, the total number of Pokémon species has now surpassed the number of kanji required for elementary school students to memorize.

Pokémon now exceeds elementary school kanji

Japanese elementary students are required to learn 1,026 kanji characters during their six years of primary education. These characters form the foundation for reading newspapers, books, and everyday written communication in Japan.

However, the current Pokémon roster already exceeds that number.

As of now, the franchise includes 1,028 Pokémon species, meaning the number of creatures officially documented in the Pokédex has surpassed the standard elementary school kanji requirement.

The comparison quickly went viral on Japanese social media, gaining more than 1.7 million views shortly after the post was shared.

For many fans, the statistic highlights just how massive the Pokémon franchise has become after nearly three decades of expansion.

Understanding the Japanese kanji system

Kanji characters are Chinese derived logographic symbols used in the Japanese writing system.

While historical records contain over 50,000 kanji, the modern standardized list known as Jōyō Kanji includes 2,136 characters considered essential for everyday literacy.

The 1,026 characters taught during elementary school represent roughly half of that list and cover most daily reading needs.

A franchise approaching 30 years

The comparison also comes at a symbolic moment for the Pokémon franchise. The series is approaching its 30th anniversary, having launched in 1996 and grown into one of the largest entertainment brands in the world.

From video games and animated series to trading cards and films, Pokémon has expanded continuously with new generations introducing additional creatures.

Recent titles such as Pokémon Legends Z-A and upcoming entries like Pokémon Winds & Wave continue to expand the Pokédex even further.

If the trend continues, the number of Pokémon species could soon surpass 1,034, depending on the final evolution lines of upcoming starter Pokémon.

For fans, the viral comparison serves as a fun reminder of just how enormous the Pokémon universe has become over the years.
