The Elder Scrolls 6 returns to classic RPG roots with new engine

After years of silence, new information about The Elder Scrolls VI has finally emerged, giving fans a clearer picture of the project’s direction.
During a recent podcast appearance, Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios shared several updates about the highly anticipated RPG sequel, including details about the technology powering the game and the overall design philosophy behind it.
Built with Creation Engine 3
One of the biggest revelations is that The Elder Scrolls VI is being developed using Creation Engine 3, the newest version of Bethesda’s proprietary game engine.
This technology represents a significant step forward from Creation Engine 2, which powered Starfield.
While many fans initially assumed the new Elder Scrolls game would use the same engine as Starfield, Bethesda appears to be pushing ahead with an even more advanced technical foundation.
The upgraded engine is expected to improve multiple aspects of the game including world simulation, graphics, and overall performance.
A return to classic RPG roots
Howard also emphasized that the next Elder Scrolls title will return to the classic single player RPG design that originally made Bethesda famous.
Instead of following the direction of titles such as Fallout 76 or experimenting with newer formats, the studio wants to focus on the type of immersive open world RPG experience players associate with the company’s golden era.
Howard specifically referenced beloved games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 as examples of the style the team hopes to revisit.
The goal is to recreate the sense of discovery and freedom that players feel when they first step into a Bethesda world.
Development milestone reached
Although the studio remains cautious about revealing too many details, Howard confirmed that the project has reached an important internal milestone.
The game has now entered a stage where a playable build already exists, allowing developers to actively test gameplay systems and evaluate the experience.
This does not necessarily mean the game will release soon, but it indicates steady progress after more than seven years since the original teaser announcement.
One of the most anticipated RPGs in development

The Elder Scrolls VI was first revealed with a short teaser trailer several years ago, instantly becoming one of the most anticipated games in development.
Since then, Bethesda has remained relatively quiet about the project while focusing on other releases.
With the introduction of Creation Engine 3 and a renewed focus on classic RPG gameplay, fans now have new reasons to be excited about the future of the series.
