Resident Evil Requiem Mechanics Hint at RE1 and Code: Veronica Remakes

[SPOILERS] Is Resident Evil Requiem Hinting at Future RE Remakes?
With the release of Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry in the legendary survival horror franchise, fans have already begun dissecting every frame. Beyond its chilling story of Grace Ashcroft, players have noticed a recurring pattern: several of the game’s core mechanics and environmental assets feel like a “tech demo” for long-requested remakes of Resident Evil 1 and CODE: Veronica.
The “Testing Ground” Theory
Historically, Capcom has used new mainline entries to test assets for upcoming remakes. Resident Evil VII pioneered the chain cutters and first-person perspectives used in RE2 Remake, and Village tested the werewolf-like AI that would later influence the Ganados in RE4 Remake.
In Requiem, fans like user SolidPyramid on social media have pointed out several suspicious connections:
- The Lighter Mechanic: Early in the game, the protagonist uses a lighter in a sequence that feels identical to Claire Redfieldโs prison escape in CODE: Veronica.
- Classic Enemy Archetypes: Requiem reintroduces giant spiders and mutated flora (Plant 42 vibes), enemies that were absent from the RE2 and RE3 remakes but are staples of the original 1996 game and CODE: Veronica.
- The Casino & Roulette Tables: Detailed assets for a casino area in Requiem have raised eyebrows, as the casino is a major iconic location in Rockfort Island from CODE: Veronica.
Subtle Easter Eggs or Project Codenames?
It isn’t just the mechanics; it’s the environment. In one specific area of the Rhodes Hill facility, players can find a toy dollhouse containing exactly four dollsโa possible nod to the original S.T.A.R.S. survivors from the first game (Chris, Jill, Barry, and Rebecca).
Furthermore, eagle-eyed players have found numbered blocks in a nursery room that, when rearranged, spell out “CV” and “RE1.” While this could be a simple nod to the franchise’s history, the high fidelity of these specific assets suggests they weren’t made for just a one-off cameo.

A 30th Anniversary Celebration?
While the evidence for future remakes is compelling, some fans remain skeptical. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise. It is entirely possible that Requiem includes these elements as an “homage” to the series’ roots rather than a teaser for future products.
However, given Capcom’s success with the RE Engine remakes, completing the “RE Engine Timeline” with a reimagined Spencer Mansion and Rockfort Island seems like a logical next step for the studio.
