Quick Share Bug Removes Location Data When Sending to iPhone

The rollout of Quick Share’s cross-platform support marks a major milestone for Android users, allowing seamless file transfers directly to Apple’s AirDrop ecosystem. First introduced alongside the Galaxy S26 series and gradually expanding to older devices like Galaxy S25 and S24 via One UI 8.5, the feature promises fast and convenient sharing without relying on third-party apps.

However, this newfound convenience comes with an unexpected drawback. A bug affecting metadata has surfaced, causing important file information to disappear during transfers from Galaxy devices to iPhone.

Location Data Disappears During Transfers

Users have reported that when photos are sent from a Galaxy device to an iPhone, location data (GPS) embedded in the image is completely removed. In some cases, even camera lens information appears to display incorrectly after the transfer.

Interestingly, this issue does not occur when sharing files between Galaxy devices, where all metadata remains intact. The problem only arises during cross-platform transfers to iOS, suggesting a flaw specifically tied to how Quick Share handles compatibility with Apple’s system.

Samsung Confirms Metadata Processing Issue

Samsung has already acknowledged the problem. According to a Samsung forum moderator, engineers are actively investigating the issue and have identified it as an error in metadata handling within Quick Share.

The company clarified that this bug does not affect the quality of images or videos. Instead, it only impacts background file data, such as location tags and technical shooting details. A software update is currently in development to address the issue.

Additional Reports Raise More Questions

Beyond missing metadata, some users have noticed another unusual behavior. When enabling AirDrop compatibility mode within Quick Share settings, certain Galaxy devices appear to disconnect from Wi-Fi automatically.

It remains unclear whether this is a bug or an intentional adjustment to optimize wireless transfer stability. Either way, it highlights that cross-ecosystem sharing is still in its early stages and may require further refinement.

More Features Planned for Future Updates

Despite the current issues, Samsung continues to push forward with its vision of seamless file sharing across ecosystems. The company has already teased a “Tap to Share” feature expected to arrive with One UI 9, which will allow users to transfer files simply by bringing devices close together.

Early Stage Feature with Fix on the Way

For users who rely heavily on location tracking in photos, especially for organizing memories on maps within iOS, it may be best to wait for the upcoming fix before fully adopting the feature.

That said, for everyday sharing needs like sending photos or videos casually, the issue may not be a dealbreaker. Notably, transfers from iPhone to Galaxy devices do not suffer from the same metadata loss, with all information remaining intact.

Currently, the feature is still in beta for older devices, while newer flagships like the Galaxy S26 Ultra can use it immediately out of the box. Samsung has reassured users that a fix is coming soon, aiming to deliver a fully seamless experience between Galaxy and Apple ecosystems.
