Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold Expansion Announced for January 2027

Square Enix has officially unveiled Evercold, the sixth expansion for the massively popular Final Fantasy XIV Online, with a planned release in January 2027. The announcement was made during Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, where producer and director Naoki Yoshida shared exciting details about the future of the game.

A New Saga Begins

The Evercold expansion will kick off a brand-new story arc titled “Godless Realms Saga”, taking players on fresh adventures as the Warrior of Light. The teaser hints at mysterious lands and new threats awaiting players in unexplored regions.

Major Features and Gameplay Updates

Evercold is shaping up to be one of the biggest updates in FFXIV history, bringing a wide range of new content:

  • Two new jobs: Tank and Physical Ranged DPS
  • Level cap increase from 100 to 110
  • New cities and areas to explore
  • New dungeons, trials, and raids
  • Ultimate raid and PvP updates
  • Expanded customization options

In addition, players will experience a battle system overhaul with two modes:

  • Reborn Mode – Based on the current combat system
  • Evolved Mode – Focuses more on job identity

New jobs introduced in this expansion will be exclusive to Evolved Mode, adding a fresh layer of depth to gameplay.

Evangelion Crossover Confirmed

One of the most surprising reveals is a collaboration with the iconic anime EVANGELION.

The crossover raid series, “Ghosts of Desire”, promises a unique blend of Final Fantasy storytelling and Evangelion’s signature style, making it one of the most anticipated additions in the expansion.

System Overhauls and Player Experience

Evercold will also introduce several improvements designed to enhance long-term gameplay:

  • Season system overhaul for better progression
  • Armoury updates for multi-job flexibility
  • Expanded character customization options

These changes aim to refine both casual and hardcore player experiences, ensuring smoother progression and deeper personalization.

More Content Before Launch

Before Evercold arrives, players can look forward to ongoing updates through the Patch 7.5 series, including:

  • New story quests
  • Additional raids and trials
  • New exploration content

This ensures that the game remains active and engaging leading up to the expansion release.

Free Trial Expansion and Switch 2 Version

Square Enix also announced that the Free Trial will expand to include the Shadowbringers expansion, offering hundreds of hours of content for new players.

Additionally, Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, bringing the MMORPG experience to even more players worldwide.

Final Thoughts

With Evercold, Square Enix is clearly pushing Final Fantasy XIV into its next evolution. From a brand-new storyline and gameplay systems to high-profile collaborations, this expansion looks set to deliver one of the most ambitious updates in the game’s history.

For both veterans and newcomers, 2027 is shaping up to be a massive year for FFXIV.
