God of War Director Confirms Kratos Will Return as Lead in the Next Mainline Game

Fans wondering about Kratos’ future can finally put their concerns to rest. Although God of War: Laufey shifts the spotlight to Faye, Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that the Ghost of Sparta will once again take center stage in the franchise’s next mainline installment.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) last week, Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica Studio, confirmed that development on the next God of War game will begin in earnest after God of War: Laufey. More importantly, he assured fans that the upcoming title will once again feature Kratos as its protagonist.

God of War: Laufey Sets the Stage

While Barlog did not reveal story details or the mythology that the next game will explore, he explained that God of War: Laufey is directly connected to the narrative established in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.

According to him, the new title not only expands the existing storyline but also lays the foundation for the franchise’s next major chapter. He also described the current state of the game’s world as something he is personally very excited about.

Kratos Remains the Face of the Franchise

The confirmation may not come as a complete surprise to longtime fans, as Kratos continues to be the iconic face of the God of War series. The character has remained central to the franchise, including appearances in spin-off projects, while Sony is also continuing development on the live-action God of War television adaptation despite previous production changes.

About God of War: Laufey

God of War: Laufey tells the story of Faye following her death as her spirit journeys to a realm known as Everywhen, the afterlife for the gods. Driven by her determination to protect her family, she must battle powerful deities and dark magical forces while uncovering new mysteries connected to the God of War universe.

The game is scheduled to launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
