SAO: Echoes of Aincrad focuses on first 2 floors to avoid 10-year dev cycle
Bandai Namco has officially shared new details regarding the ambitious scope of Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online. As the first title in the franchise to let players fully step into the shoes of a custom survivor during the original Aincrad incident, expectations for the game’s scale are high. However, Producer Yosuke Futami recently clarified in an interview with Famitsu that the game will focus exclusively on the first two floors of the floating castle. He explained that attempting to recreate all 100 floors at this level of detail would be an impossible task for a modern development cycle.
The massive scale of a “Living” Aincrad
According to Futami, the team prioritized quality and immersion over a high floor count. Even though the game only covers the initial stages of the death game, the playable area for these two floors spans over 10 square kilometers. This space is filled with intricate environments, hidden dungeons, and vertical exploration that surpasses previous SAO titles. Futami noted that if the studio attempted to develop all 100 floors with this level of fidelity, it would realistically take 10 years to complete the project. To avoid keeping fans waiting for a decade, the team chose a focused scope that captures the true atmosphere of the light novels.
New perspectives on Kirito and the death game
Echoes of Aincrad features a completely original storyline written specifically for this experience. While the game follows the general timeline of the Aincrad arc, it includes scenes from the novels that never appeared in the anime. Most interestingly, Futami teased a shift in perspective regarding the “Black Swordsman.” Since players experience the world as one of the 10,000 trapped individuals, their view of Kirito may change.
“While Kirito is the hero of the original story, seeing him through the eyes of another player in the death game might lead you to different conclusions about his character,” Futami hinted.
The key features of Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online include:
- Custom Avatar System: Create your own player and struggle to survive alongside 10,000 others in the virtual world.
- Open-World Exploration: Traverse a massive 10-square-kilometer environment across the first two floors of Aincrad.
- Deep Narrative: Experience a fresh story that integrates overlooked details from the original light novels.
- Survival Elements: Manage quests, gear, and party relationships to find a way to clear the game and return to reality.
- Next-Gen Visuals: Developed specifically for high-end hardware to bring the iconic floating castle to life.

Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online is scheduled to launch on July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, followed by a PC release on July 10, 2026. By narrowing the focus to the beginning of the journey, the developers hope to provide the most authentic “SAO survivor” experience to date. Fans can look forward to a world that feels vast and dangerous, even within the limits of its first two floors.
