Pearl Abyss Considers Crimson Desert for Switch 2

Crimson Desert has quickly positioned itself as a top contender for game of the year. Originally conceived by the famous MMORPG developers at Pearl Abyss, the title successfully pivoted into a premium, single-player offline experience. The game is packed with meticulous details, ranging from breathtaking environments to incredibly complex combat mechanics.
However, delivering this level of fidelity comes at a high-performance cost. Optimizing such a massive open-world game for different platforms is a monumental task, especially considering that even the standard PlayStation 5 hardware occasionally struggles to render the game at maximum potential. This raises a major question: can it run on Nintendo’s newest hardware?
R&D Has Officially Begun for the Switch 2
According to a recent report from the South Korean news outlet Yonhap News, Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young directly addressed the possibility of bringing Crimson Desert to Nintendo’s next-generation platform.
The report confirms that Pearl Abyss is genuinely interested in the platform and has officially begun the Research and Development (R&D) phase for a Nintendo Switch 2 port. This strongly implies that the development team is already in possession of the official Nintendo Switch 2 DevKits and is actively testing the hardware’s capabilities.
This ambitious move follows a recent industry trend of seemingly impossible blockbuster ports running smoothly on the new Nintendo console, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, and Resident Evil Requiem, all of which received massive praise for their optimization.

Hardware Limitations Could Cancel the Project
Despite the exciting news, the CEO maintained a highly realistic outlook. The Switch 2 port is currently strictly in the R&D testing phase and has not yet entered full-scale development.
Pearl Abyss openly admitted that due to the Nintendo Switch 2’s inherently lower hardware specifications compared to current-gen home consoles, there is a very real possibility that the port could be entirely cancelled in the future if they cannot achieve an acceptable level of performance and quality.
About Crimson Desert
First unveiled in 2019, Crimson Desert was initially planned as an MMORPG prequel to the wildly successful Black Desert. However, the development team eventually shifted their entire focus to creating a deep, narrative-driven single-player RPG.
The story follows Macduff, a hardened mercenary who travels to the massive and unforgiving continent of Pywell. As he navigates this brutal world, he finds himself constantly battling not only rival factions and dangerous creatures but also the haunting memories of his own tragic past.
The game is currently available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam (PC).
