Zelda And Link Confirmed As Friends In New Hyrule Warriors Story

The long running debate surrounding the relationship between Princess Zelda and Link has taken a surprising turn in the latest Hyrule Warriors entry titled Age of Imprisonment. A recent story detail reveals that despite decades of fan interpretations, hopeful shipping, emotional scenes, and countless adventures shared across multiple timelines, Zelda considers Link a friend and comrade in battle.

This discovery comes shortly after another fan ship shock from the Mario universe where it was confirmed that Mario and Peach are not a romantic couple. In that situation, the only confirmed romantic link was between Mario and Pauline from New Donk City. Because of that earlier revelation, fans naturally speculated that Zelda and Link might finally be acknowledged as a canon couple, especially after romantic and heartfelt scenes seen in Skyward Sword.

However, in Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, a player uncovered new quest text that firmly clarifies their dynamic. During the quest titled Learning the Blade, Zelda receives praise from a stranger about her sword skills. She responds by saying she was inspired by her knight. The line specifically states that the knight she speaks about is her friend.

There is only one knight who uses a sword in the same way that Zelda does, making the reference undeniably pointing to Link. Though other warriors appear, such as champions from different races, none of them use a sword style close to Link’s techniques. The Gerudo bodyguards use a crescent shaped scimitar and other characters wield weapons unique to their own cultures. Link remains the only true sword focused knight in the group.

This story detail eliminates the ambiguity that has driven fan theories for years. Zelda values Link deeply, but the game makes it clear that she sees him as a trusted ally and friend, not a romantic partner.

About Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment

The game features intense musou style combat and explores a storyline where Princess Zelda travels to the era known as the Age of Imprisonment. She works together with legendary warriors to prevent a looming threat that could affect the present world while Link focuses on restoring the kingdom. Players encounter historic battle leaders and wielders of sacred stones who play major roles in this new narrative. The campaign presents a powerful version of Zelda as a warrior princess and strategist, while maintaining Link’s role as the steadfast knight protecting the kingdom.

THIS IS OUR SAY

Fans have shipped Zelda and Link for decades across games, timelines, and universes. But this reveal proves something important. The strongest bonds in games do not always need romance to hold meaning. Their relationship is built on loyalty, trust, respect, and shared battles. If anything, defining them as friends makes their connection more powerful because it is a choice, not an obligation.
