Qualcomm leads Wi-Fi 8 innovation ahead of 6G era

Qualcomm revealed its next-generation connectivity strategy at Mobile World Congress, highlighting Qualcomm Wi-Fi 8 technology and a long-term 6G roadmap targeting commercial rollout in 2029.
X105 5G modem improves efficiency
The company introduced the new X105 5G modem, its fifth-generation AI-powered 5G processor. The modem features a redesigned RF transceiver that reduces power consumption by up to 30% compared to the previous X85 model.
In addition, the chip is 15% smaller. This reduction allows smartphone manufacturers to optimize internal space while improving battery life.
FastConnect 8800 leads Wi-Fi 8 transition
Qualcomm also unveiled the FastConnect 8800, the first chipset to support Wi-Fi 8. The platform focuses on AI-native network management.
Compared to previous Wi-Fi 7 solutions, FastConnect 8800 can deliver up to twice the peak speed. Although it still uses a 6nm manufacturing process, Qualcomm redesigned the 4×4 radio architecture. As a result, gigabit-level coverage extends up to three times farther.
Bluetooth 7.0 and HDT support
Beyond Wi-Fi, the FastConnect 8800 supports Bluetooth 7.0 and Bluetooth HDT. High Data Throughput technology increases transfer speeds from 2Mbps to 7.5Mbps.
This upgrade significantly improves file transfers and high-resolution audio streaming.

Enterprise expansion with Dragonwing
Qualcomm expanded its connectivity portfolio with Dragonwing Wi-Fi 8 products designed for enterprise and IoT environments. Devices powered by these chips are expected to enter the market in late 2026.
As Wi-Fi 8 adoption increases, businesses and large buildings will benefit from stronger and more stable high-speed coverage.
6G roadmap set for 2029
Looking further ahead, Qualcomm confirmed its 6G strategy. The company plans to finalize 6G standards by 2028 and target global commercial deployment in 2029.
Qualcomm aims to build 6G as a fully AI-native network. The future platform will support high-performance computing and advanced sensing capabilities.
While 6G may still feel futuristic, Wi-Fi 8 is much closer to reality. Early Wi-Fi 8 routers are expected to launch next year, with prices starting around 12,000 THB.
