Dragon Quest X Online Prepares to Add Google Gemini AI NPC

Dragon Quest X Online continues to receive strong support from both its developers and its highly dedicated player base. Although the game is planning to conclude its main storyline in the middle of this year, there is still plenty of new content waiting to be served in the future. Recently, The Sankei Shimbun reported that during a special event last week, Square Enix and Google officially announced a special partnership for the game.

Soon, Google Gemini will be integrated into Dragon Quest X Online in the form of an AI NPC. This will feature a slime named ‘Oshaberi Slimy’ (Chatty Slime), allowing players to interact and converse with it using Generative AI technology. Additionally, it has the ability to analyze the situation on the screen to determine the most appropriate responses to the player.

Square Enix President Takashi Anzai sees this feature as a personal assistant that will keep players from feeling lonely and can even help guide them on their routes. Meanwhile, Yuji Horii, the legendary creator of the franchise, expressed his excitement, stating that AI will have a massive impact on the gaming experience and will unimaginably transform video games in the coming years.

It is well known that Square Enix has taken a stance of increasingly supporting the use of artificial intelligence in their video games. However, even though AI is highly popular in Japan, it cannot be denied that the use of this technology remains highly debated regarding its environmental impact and its effects on the job market, especially within the gaming industry.
