Hachishakusama Turns Japanese Urban Legend Scary

Hachishakusama is bringing one of Japan’s most famous urban legends into a new PC horror exploration game.

Developed by Japanese newcomer Fukachi World, the game adapts the story of Hachishakusama, the terrifying 8-foot-tall woman known for her white dress, wide-brimmed hat, and eerie voice that repeats “Po… Po… Po…”

The game, also known by its Japanese title 八尺様がいた夏休み, aims to mix quiet rural scenery with unsettling supernatural fear.

A Summer Trip Turns Into A Nightmare

The story follows a young boy named Saku, who travels with his father to the rural village of Kibuse because of his father’s situation.

At first, the setting feels peaceful. The countryside is surrounded by nature, calm scenery, and the soft feeling of summer. However, Saku soon encounters a mysterious spirit tied to the land.

That spirit is Hachishakusama, the legendary 8-foot-tall woman.

After becoming the target of her strange affection, Saku finds himself trapped in a summer that offers no easy escape. She stays close to him, follows him, and turns what should have been a quiet visit into something far more dangerous.

Exploration Meets Survival Horror

Hachishakusama uses an exploration-focused structure.

Players will search the Japanese countryside, examine objects, and interact with the environment to trigger events. The game focuses on atmosphere, letting players discover more about the village and its supernatural mystery through careful observation.

However, this is not only a slow exploration game.

The horror side appears when players must escape from Hachishakusama herself. She enjoys playing with her target, so players need to hide from her gaze, avoid obstacles, and run when survival becomes the only option.

This mix of relaxed exploration and sudden fear gives the game an interesting contrast.

Rural Beauty With Hidden Fear

One of the game’s major hooks is its setting.

The visuals highlight the quiet beauty of rural Japan, with natural scenery that changes over time. This creates a warm and nostalgic summer mood, but the game places a deeper fear beneath that peaceful surface.

That contrast matters because Hachishakusama is not presented only as a monster to escape. The game also wants to tell a story that can feel strangely heartfelt while still carrying the fear of an old urban legend.

Key Features

Hachishakusama features a story based on a famous Japanese urban legend, exploration across rural environments, object interaction, event-based progression, atmospheric countryside visuals, survival sequences, chase moments, hiding mechanics, obstacle avoidance, and a horror tone mixed with emotional storytelling.

The source also notes that this game is different from Hachishaku by Trash Panda Games, which was released in 2025.

THIS IS our take

Hachishakusama sounds interesting because it does not rely only on jump scares or simple monster chases. Its strongest idea comes from contrast: a calm summer village, beautiful countryside scenery, and the constant threat of an 8-foot-tall woman who refuses to leave. For horror fans who enjoy folklore, urban legends, and slow-building fear, this could become one PC title worth watching.
