More than a decade after its original release, Grand Theft Auto V has become the subject of a viral discussion after players noticed just how much its installation size has grown on modern hardware.

A post shared by X user SlySinatraa highlights that the PS5 version now requires 103.3GB of storage, compared to the game’s original 17GB installation on the PlayStation 3 when it launched in 2013.

From 17GB to 103.3GB

The comparison has surprised many players, illustrating how dramatically game development has evolved over the past decade.

After launching on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, GTA V was later remastered for the PlayStation 4 before receiving another enhanced release for PlayStation 5. Each version introduced higher-quality assets and technical improvements that steadily increased the game’s storage requirements.

Why Has the Game Become So Large?

Several factors have contributed to GTA V’s growing install size over the years.

Rockstar Games has continuously upgraded the game’s graphics with improved textures, denser vegetation, and enhanced environmental details. More importantly, Grand Theft Auto Online has expanded significantly through years of content updates, making it the primary client included with modern versions of the game.

As a result, much of the additional storage requirement reflects GTA Online’s accumulated content rather than the single-player campaign alone.
