Nintendo Switch 2 Gets User-Replaceable Battery Version in Europe

Nintendo Switch 2 is officially getting a revised model in Europe, with Nintendo preparing a version that allows users to remove and replace the battery more easily.

The change is being made to align with upcoming consumer protection rules in the region, where electronic devices are expected to become easier for users to repair or maintain without unnecessary service barriers.

Nintendo Switch 2 gets a battery-focused revision

According to the source, Nintendo has announced updated specifications for the European version of Nintendo Switch 2.

The revised model will not change the system’s price or core processing specifications. Instead, the main adjustment is focused on the battery design, allowing the battery to be removed and replaced by users.

However, there is a small trade-off. The battery capacity is reportedly being reduced by around 1%, moving from 5,220 mAh to 5,175 mAh. The revised unit is also expected to be around 10 grams heavier than the current version.

Joy-Con 2 will also be updated

The source also states that Joy-Con 2 controllers will receive a similar user-replaceable battery revision.

Unlike the main console, the battery capacity for Joy-Con 2 will remain the same. The only minor change mentioned is weight, with each side becoming around 2 grams heavier.

In actual use, this small difference may not be very noticeable for most players, especially during regular handheld or docked play.

Pro Controller battery sees a larger change

The bigger adjustment appears to affect the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.

According to the source, the revised Pro Controller will use a smaller battery, dropping from 1,070 mAh to 897 mAh. That is a reduction of around 16%.

For players who prioritize longer controller battery life, this may be the most important detail to watch. The source suggests that those who want the current larger-battery version may want to keep an eye on existing stock before the revised model becomes the standard replacement.

Rollout begins from autumn

The revised Nintendo Switch 2 model with a user-replaceable battery is expected to begin rolling out in autumn, around September to November.

It will be introduced as a replacement for the current version, with the source noting that the new model is expected to fully replace standard stock by February, when the relevant European rules begin taking effect.

The revised controllers are expected to begin switching over later in the year, with the same broader replacement direction.

Europe-only change for now

For now, the battery revision applies only to Europe.

That means players in Southeast Asia should not assume that the same hardware revision will automatically appear in local retail channels unless Nintendo confirms it for other markets. Still, the move is worth watching because hardware changes in one major region can sometimes influence product expectations elsewhere.

THIS IS our take

Nintendo’s revised Switch 2 model feels like a practical response to changing repair and consumer protection standards. The user-replaceable battery is a welcome move, but the smaller Pro Controller battery may disappoint players who care most about long play sessions. For SEA players, this is mainly a hardware development to monitor rather than an immediate regional change.
