Final Fantasy IX Anime Back in Production With New French Studio, Targeting 2028 Release

Final Fantasy IX Anime Back in Production
The long-awaited Final Fantasy IX anime project appears to be showing signs of life once again after a long period of silence. According to the latest reports from French entertainment industry media, the anime has been taken over by a new production studio from France and is now targeting a planned release window in 2028, although Square Enix has yet to make an official announcement.

According to a report from Écran Total, a French magazine focused on film and television business news, the Final Fantasy IX anime project has found new momentum following a major production shift. After its original production partner, Cyber Group Studios, shut down earlier this year, the project was reportedly handed over to a new French studio, Euro Visual, which has now taken responsibility for the anime’s development.
Despite the change in studios, the report notes that the overall concept and direction of the anime remain largely consistent with previously revealed information when the project was first announced.
The report further reveals that the Final Fantasy IX anime will be a 2D animated series targeting children aged approximately 6–13 years old. The series is planned to consist of 13 episodes, each with a runtime of around 22 minutes. This creative direction marks a noticeable departure from the traditional image of the Final Fantasy RPG series, which typically appeals to teenage and adult audiences.
In terms of story, early details suggest that the anime will follow a group of children who are descendants of Vivi, one of the most beloved characters in Final Fantasy IX. These new protagonists will confront mysteries and emotional legacies from the past, all set against the familiar backdrop of the iconic city of Alexandria.
The Final Fantasy IX anime was originally announced back in 2021 as a collaboration between Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios, generating significant excitement among fans worldwide. However, after Cyber Group Studios closed its operations, the project went quiet for an extended period, leading many to fear that it had been quietly canceled.
The recent appearance of Euro Visual in industry reports is therefore being viewed as a positive sign that the project has not been abandoned and is instead continuing under new leadership.
As of now, Square Enix has not officially confirmed the current status of the Final Fantasy IX anime. Still, information from industry sources offers renewed hope that the project is actively moving forward. If development proceeds as planned, the return of Final Fantasy IX’s classic fantasy world in anime form for a new generation of viewers in 2028 could represent an important step in expanding the Final Fantasy universe to a broader global audience.
