Metacritic review policy tested by Resident Evil Requiem AI controversy

Metacritic removes AI generated review for Resident Evil Requiem

Metacritic has removed an AI generated review of Resident Evil Requiem, marking one of the first major enforcement actions against AI written critic content on the platform.

The decision followed an internal review that determined the article had not been written by a human reviewer. As a result, concerns emerged regarding the credibility of the game’s overall Metascore.

Source traced to VideoGamer and ClickOut Media

The controversial review reportedly came from VideoGamer, which operates under ClickOut Media. The outlet had recently faced scrutiny over layoffs and a shift toward AI driven content production.

The review appeared under pseudonyms such as “John Gamer” and “Brian Merrygold.” Observers noted that the profile images showed signs consistent with AI generation. Furthermore, critics argued that the writing style felt repetitive and generic, raising suspicions that the piece had not been based on hands on gameplay.

The issue gained traction after Andrés, known online as @Andrew_east, publicly questioned the authenticity of the review on X. In addition, Dom Sacco of Esports News UK had previously warned about content quality concerns related to ClickOut Media’s editorial restructuring.

Metacritic reiterates zero tolerance policy

In response, Metacritic co founder Marc Doyle confirmed via email that the platform does not accept AI generated critic reviews. If detected, such reviews are removed immediately. Moreover, outlets found in violation risk suspension until further review is completed.

This policy aims to protect the integrity of Metascore, which has influenced purchasing decisions for more than 25 years.

Impact on Resident Evil Requiem score

After the removal, Resident Evil Requiem’s verified critic score remains around 88 based on legitimate human written reviews. The game has received praise for blending classic survival horror tension with modern action mechanics.

The incident highlights a growing challenge in the gaming media landscape. As AI tools become more widespread, platforms must reinforce editorial standards to maintain trust.

For Metacritic, the message is clear. Review aggregation depends on human judgment, and the platform intends to keep it that way.
