Valve says new Steam Machine may miss 2026 release window

Valve warns Steam Machine may miss 2026 release window

The long anticipated return of the Steam Machine may not arrive as planned. According to a recent update from Valve, the company is facing manufacturing challenges that could delay the device beyond its previously expected timeline.

Valve shared the information through its annual community update on the Steam website. The update suggested that meeting the original production and shipping schedule is becoming increasingly uncertain.

Hardware shortages causing production challenges

One of the main reasons for the potential delay is the global shortage of critical components, particularly memory and storage hardware.

Valve explained that the availability of these parts has become a major obstacle in the manufacturing process. While the company initially announced hardware plans in 2025 with the goal of releasing the system in 2026, the situation surrounding component supply has become more complicated than expected.

Because of these issues, analysts believe the release window could potentially slip into 2027.

Valve Steam Machine delay due to hardware component shortages

Earlier expectations pointed to early 2026

As recently as February, Valve still suggested that the new Steam Machine remained on track for a launch during the first half of 2026.

At the time, the company acknowledged that pricing and final release timing were still being determined but maintained confidence in the general schedule.

However, the latest update appears to move away from expectations of a release during the first or second quarter of 2026, raising doubts about whether the system will arrive within that year.

Rising component prices add more pressure

Another complication involves the rising cost of hardware components.

The shortage of memory parts has not only affected supply but has also pushed prices significantly higher. RAM prices for PCs have recently surged, which directly impacts the cost of building high performance gaming hardware.

Since the goal of the Steam Machine is to provide a powerful yet affordable alternative to gaming PCs or gaming laptops, higher component costs could undermine one of the device’s key selling points.

Expected price range and future updates

Earlier estimates suggested that the new Steam Machine could launch with a starting price of around 499 USD, while higher end models might reach 899 USD depending on the hardware configuration.

However, if the supply crisis continues, these estimates may change before the final launch.

Valve emphasized that the situation is still evolving and that the company will provide further updates once a final decision about production timelines has been made.

For now, players interested in the next generation Steam Machine may have to wait longer than expected while Valve navigates the ongoing hardware supply challenges.
