Meta Announces Removal of End-to-End Encryption on Instagram DMs
In a surprising shift in privacy policy, Meta has officially decided to discontinue the End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) option for direct messages (DMs) on Instagram. The company announced that this feature will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Users have already begun receiving notifications via the appโs support pages and in-app alerts to prepare for the transition.
Action Required for Encrypted Chat Users
For those currently using “Secret Conversations” or secure encrypted chats, Instagram advises downloading any important media or message history immediately.
- Download Data: Follow the in-app prompts to save your secure conversations.
- App Updates: Users on older versions of Instagram may need to update to the latest version to access the menu for downloading affected chat logs before they become inaccessible.
Why the Change? Low Adoption and Safety Concerns
Dina El-Kassaby Luce, a spokesperson for Meta, told The Verge that the decision was driven by the extremely low number of people utilizing the feature compared to the total user base. Furthermore, removing E2EE allows the platform to better balance user privacy with public safety.
By shifting away from E2EE, Meta can more effectively monitor for illicit activities and protect younger users from bad actors, aligning with policies already in place on platforms like TikTok. While E2EE prevents anyoneโincluding Metaโfrom seeing messages, it also limits the company’s ability to proactively flag dangerous content before it is reported.

Alternatives for Privacy Seekers
For users who still prioritize the highest level of encryption for their digital communications, Meta suggests switching to WhatsApp, where E2EE remains the standard. Additionally, Meta confirmed that Facebook Messenger will continue to offer E2EE for the time being, making Instagram the only major Meta social platform to drop the feature entirely.
This move highlights the ongoing struggle for tech giants to find a “middle ground” between absolute user privacy and the demands of law enforcement and child safety advocates. If you have sensitive information stored in an encrypted Instagram chat, ensure you back it up before the May 8 deadline.
