Google App Android Update: Easier Access to AI Mode Chat History

Google Updates Android App for Easier AI Mode History Access

Google has begun rolling out a significant UI update for its Android app, specifically focusing on streamlining access to AI Mode chat history. This change aims to provide a more seamless experience by allowing users to jump back into previous AI conversations directly from the main Search tab and Discover feed, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple menus.

Redesigned Home Screen Shortcuts

The most noticeable change involves the removal of the Search Labs “vial” icon from the top header. In its place, Google has introduced a permanent AI Mode history button.

  • New Iconography: The history button has transitioned from a circular design to a sleek “horizontal lines” icon.
  • Instant Access: Tapping this button triggers a slide-out drawer showing recent chat history, mirroring the “Hamburger” menu found in the standalone Gemini app.
  • Consistent Navigation: Inside the AI Mode home screen, the history icon has moved to the left side, while the back button has been replaced by a “downward arrow” on the right.

Search Labs Finds a New Home

With the primary shortcut now dedicated to AI history, Search Labsโ€”the hub for testing experimental featuresโ€”has been relocated. It can now be found within the User Account menu, listed as the first item next to the Settings option. This reorganization keeps the main interface clean while still allowing power users to manage their participation in preview features.

Rollout and Beta Access

While this “swipe-to-access” history feature has been available on iOS since late 2024, it is only now reaching the Android ecosystem.

  • Beta Version: The update is currently appearing for users enrolled in the Google app beta version 17.9 or higher.
  • Global Release: Following the beta testing phase, the feature is expected to roll out to the general public in the coming weeks.

Android users interested in trying these navigation improvements early can join the Google App Beta program for free via the Google Play Store.
