nstagram Introduces “Instants” for One-Time Photo Sharing
Instagram is quietly testing a brand-new photo-sharing app called Instants, aiming to bring back the charm of raw, unfiltered moments. The app is currently being trialed in select regions, including Spain and Italy.
Photos That Disappear After One View
The core idea behind Instants is simple:
- Photos can be viewed only once
- Content disappears after viewing
- Images remain on the system for up to 24 hours
This approach revives the concept of ephemeral content, where moments are meant to be quick, real, and not permanently stored.

No Filters, No Edits, Just Real Life
Instants strips away the polished nature of traditional Instagram posts. Users can:
- Take a photo with one tap
- Not edit or apply filters
- Not upload from gallery (camera-only capture)
While basic text can be added, the focus is clearly on authentic, in-the-moment sharing rather than curated perfection.
Competing with BeReal and Snapchat
The concept closely mirrors platforms like BeReal, Snapchat, and Locket, which emphasize spontaneity and real-life connection.
By launching Instants as a separate app (and also testing it as a feature inside Instagram), the company is exploring new ways to reduce the pressure of maintaining a “perfect” social feed.
Built Around Close Friends
Instants is designed for small, private circles, using the same Close Friends list from Instagram. The goal is to create a more relaxed and intimate space where users can share without overthinking.
Can It Still Compete?
While the idea is refreshing, some question whether Instagram is late to the trend. Apps like BeReal have already popularized raw sharing, and many users are already comfortable using Instagram Stories for quick updates.
Still, Instants represents a clear attempt to reconnect users with more genuine interactions, shifting away from influencer-heavy feeds toward personal connections.
