The gaming community was recently stirred when YouTuber Techy Talk accidentally uploaded a full review of Valve’s new Steam Controller ahead of schedule. Although the video was quickly taken down, viewers were fast enough to save and share the information online.
One of the most notable details revealed is the price, set at $99 USD (around 3,600 THB). While this is slightly higher than Sony’s DualSense controller, the review claims that the functionality offered far exceeds the price, particularly its ability to act as a complete control solution for PC usage.
The standout feature highlighted in the review is the improved dual trackpads. The right trackpad functions as a mouse cursor, while the left is used for scrolling. Users can even customize them to behave like a trackball with inertia based on finger movement, making it incredibly intuitive for playing mouse-heavy games from a couch or handling general PC tasks. However, it is noted that it still cannot fully replace a real mouse in high-speed FPS or MOBA games that demand precision.
In terms of durability, Valve has implemented TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) technology in the thumbsticks. This ensures the controller is free from common issues such as stick drift or dead zones, which are persistent problems in many controllers. The device also includes four rear grip buttons and a built-in 6-axis gyro system. Additionally, the face buttons and D-pad have been redesigned to be larger and more satisfying to press compared to those on the Steam Deck.
Another convenience mentioned is the charging system. The controller comes with a wireless dongle that doubles as a magnetic charging dock. Users simply place the controller on the dock to charge without needing to plug in cables, a thoughtful design that helps prevent battery-related inconveniences.
Despite its strengths, the review also points out several drawbacks. The controller’s rough plastic surface may feel slippery for users with dry hands. The internal battery is non-removable, and notably, there is no built-in headphone jack. It also lacks premium features such as interchangeable faceplates or clicky switch-style buttons typically found in high-end controllers priced above $200 USD (around 7,300 THB).
This leak suggests that Valve may be preparing to officially launch the new Steam Controller soon. Previously, rumors indicated delays tied to the development of Steam Frame and new Steam Machine hardware due to component shortages. However, it now appears that Valve may release the controller first to reassert its position as a leader in PC gaming input innovation.
