VALORANT Unveils Skirmish: Ascension and New Kuronami Collection
Riot Games has officially introduced Skirmish: Ascension, an upgraded version of the popular Skirmish mode, as part of VALORANT Season 2026 // Act 3.
This new mode enhances competitive gameplay by combining precision shooting, quick decision-making, and ranked competition into a focused duel experience. At the same time, the update also brings back Kuronami in a brand-new form, expanding one of the game’s most popular skin lines.
Act 3 officially begins on April 29.
Skirmish: Ascension – A New Level of Competitive Duels
Skirmish: Ascension is designed as a more serious and competitive evolution of the original mode, following strong community demand for ranked play.
The mode retains VALORANT’s core gameplay elements while emphasizing:
- Gunplay precision
- Game sense and positioning
- Split-second decision-making
A key twist is that each agent is limited to only one selected ability, pushing players to rely more on mechanical skill and instincts.

The mode features a curated roster of agents, each with a single ability:
- Jett — Tailwind
- Waylay — Refract
- Chamber — Rendezvous
- Cypher — Cyber Cage
- Omen — Shrouded Step
- Phoenix — Curve Ball
- Yoru — Clone
- Iso — Contingency
- Sage — Barrier Orb
- Raze — Blast Pack
- Vyse — Arc Rose
- KAY/O — Flash/Drive
- Breach — Flashpoint

1v1 and 2v2 Ranked System
Players can queue for:
- 1v1 matches
- 2v2 matches
Each mode features separate leaderboards, powered through the For The Win (FTW) platform, with rankings divided by server, region, and platform.
Round-Based Weapon Progression
Skirmish: Ascension introduces a dynamic weapon system that evolves throughout the match:
- Rounds 1–4: Bandit and Sheriff
- Rounds 5–8: Guardian and Bulldog
- Final rounds: Vandal and Phantom
Matches follow a round-based structure, with the first team to win 10 rounds claiming victory.
The mode takes place across three warehouse-style maps, designed for fast-paced engagements and tactical positioning.
Rewards and Progression
Players can unlock rewards based on participation and rank progression:
- Combat Ready Player Card: Play 3 placement matches
- Trade Me Player Card: Play 15 matches
Special rank-based titles include:
- Gold–Platinum: Skirmish Competitor
- Diamond–Immortal: Skirmish Expert
- Radiant: Skirmish Elite
Rewards are delivered via FTW platform codes, redeemable within a limited timeframe.
Kuronami Returns with a New Evolution
Act 3 also marks the return of Kuronami, now expanded with new weapons and features.
Inspired by water elements, traditional culture, and modern craftsmanship, the collection offers a refined and deadly aesthetic.
Transforming Melee Weapon Highlight
The standout feature is a transforming melee weapon that shifts between:
- Kunai
- Katana
Transformation animations include:
- Water forming into a blade when switching to Katana
- Blade dissolving into droplets when reverting to Kunai
Weapon Effects and Features
The Kuronami collection includes:
- Unique equip animations forming weapons from water
- Custom inspect animations with music
- Enhanced reload animations using water shuriken
- Distinct firing effects and audio
- Interactive finisher trapping enemies in a water sphere
Players and teammates can interact with the finisher by shooting or striking the water sphere.
