A teardown suggests the phone is more of a reworked older model than a fully original device

The Trump Mobile T1 has finally made its way into the hands of users and media outlets after being delayed for more than nine months. However, once the device was opened up and examined in detail, the findings raised plenty of questions. According to a teardown by iFixit, the smartphone does not appear to be an entirely new device. Instead, it looks heavily based on the HTC U24 Pro, a smartphone that was originally released in 2024.

The similarity is not limited to the outside design. A closer look at the internals reportedly showed that many of the components inside the Trump T1 are almost identical to the HTC model. CT scans and physical inspection suggested that the internal layout, board structure, and several hardware details match the HTC U24 Pro very closely.

From the outside, the biggest changes appear to be mostly cosmetic. The Trump T1 comes with a gold-colored body, a slightly adjusted speaker grille design, and some minor case changes to help it look different from the original HTC device. However, these changes do not seem to represent a major redesign of the phone itself.

The “Made in America” question becomes more complicated

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the phone from the beginning was its patriotic marketing. Earlier promotional language highlighted the idea of a smartphone connected to American production and values. However, the wording on the official side later became more vague, shifting toward language about being designed with American values instead.

This has made the teardown findings even more interesting. While Trump Mobile has claimed that the device involves assembly in the United States and uses key parts connected to American production, the hardware similarities with the HTC U24 Pro suggest that the foundation of the device may have come from an existing smartphone design.

For consumers, this creates an important question: is the Trump T1 a genuinely new product, or is it mainly a rebranded version of an older device with a new identity and finish?

The internal specifications also make the phone feel slightly dated for a device arriving in 2026. This is one of the few features that makes the device stand out from other Android smartphones in the market.

However, that branding also comes with a price. The phone is listed at $499, which may be difficult for some buyers to justify if the hardware is truly based on an older HTC model. The HTC U24 Pro, which appears to be the base inspiration for the device, was already positioned as a mid-range phone rather than a premium flagship.

That does not automatically make the Trump T1 unusable. For supporters who want a phone tied closely to the Trump brand, the device may still hold appeal. But for tech-focused buyers who judge a phone mainly by value, specs, originality, and long-term support, the teardown results make the device harder to recommend.

A gold phone with a lot to prove

Trump Mobile may still try to position the Trump T1 as a unique alternative in the smartphone market, but the early teardown has already shaped much of the conversation. Instead of being discussed as a bold new American smartphone, the device is now being compared directly to the HTC U24 Pro.

In the end, the biggest issue may not be that the phone is based on an existing device. Many brands rely on manufacturing partners and shared designs. The real concern is transparency. If consumers are being asked to pay a premium for a branded phone, they will likely want to know exactly what they are buying.

For now, the Trump Mobile T1 stands as one of the more unusual smartphone releases of the year: a gold-colored device with political branding, pre-installed Truth Social, and hardware that appears to have a very familiar HTC foundation.
