Teamfight Tactics Is Moving to Unreal Engine

Teamfight Tactics Is Moving to Unreal Engine Starting with Set 18

Teamfight Tactics is preparing for one of the biggest technical changes in the gameโ€™s history. Riot Games has announced that TFT will move to Unreal Engine across all platforms beginning with Set 18, marking a major new chapter for the long-running auto battler.

The move is part of the teamโ€™s wider 2026 plan to upgrade the gameโ€™s technology and build a stronger foundation for the future. Riot also confirmed that a new standalone PC client for TFT is being accelerated and is expected to launch within a few patches after Set 18 goes live.

TFT Steps Out Further from League of Legends

Since its launch in 2019, Teamfight Tactics has existed under the larger League of Legends ecosystem and has continued to run through Leagueโ€™s Hextech Engine.

Moving to Unreal Engine gives the TFT team more room to build tools, systems, and technology specifically designed around TFTโ€™s needs. This also allows the League of Legends team to continue improving its own systems without worrying that changes to one game may affect the other.

For players, this does not mean every major improvement will appear immediately when Set 18 launches. Riot explained that the transition is a long-term foundation. The benefits will gradually appear across future sets as the team builds more features and improvements on top of the new technology.

Standalone PC Client Is Also Coming

Alongside the engine transition, Riot is also working on a new standalone PC client for Teamfight Tactics.

This is another major step toward giving TFT its own dedicated space on PC. Instead of relying entirely on the League of Legends client experience, TFT will have a setup better designed around its own updates, access flow, and player experience.

The standalone PC client is expected to launch within a few patches after Set 18 arrives.

What Players Should Expect During Set 18

During the launch period for Set 18, PC players may need to download a slightly larger patch than usual. This is because the game will be going through an important technology transition behind the scenes.

For mobile players, the existing TFT app will be automatically replaced by the Unreal version. Players do not need to uninstall the current app or take extra steps.

After the transition, future patch sizes should return closer to normal.

A New Foundation for the Convergence

Riotโ€™s move to Unreal Engine shows that the TFT team is building for the long term. The game has grown far beyond its early days as a fast-moving mode connected to League of Legends, and it now has its own global community, competitive scene, and identity.

The source also notes that the wider TFT franchise includes TFT, TFT Mobile, Golden Spatula in Southeast Asia, and Fight For The Golden Spatula in China.

With this engine shift and standalone client on the way, TFT is positioning itself to grow more independently while keeping its core strategy identity intact.
