Final Fantasy XIV Online Launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4

During this past weekend’s Fan Festival, Square Enix officially confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Online will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 beginning August 4. Existing players will be able to enjoy a free system test period during the first month, while newcomers can choose to experience the game through the unlimited-time Free Trial.

There are two free ways to get started.

The first is a complimentary system test period designed for players planning to subscribe and access the full game. During August, subscribers won’t need to pay their monthly subscription fee, with billing beginning the following month. Players who purchase either the Starter Edition or Complete Edition after September to continue through the latest expansion, Dawntrail, will also receive one free month of game time.

The second option is the familiar Free Trial, which is available across all platforms. Players can experience the game without any time limit, although some restrictions apply. The Free Trial includes a level cap of 80, limits on the amount of gil players can hold, restrictions on character creation, trading, and several social features such as chat.

Despite those limitations, players can experience four major chapters completely free:

  • A Realm Reborn
  • Heavensward
  • Stormblood
  • Shadowbringers

There is no subscription fee required for the Free Trial unless players upgrade to the Starter Edition.

Purchase Options

Final Fantasy XIV Online Free Trial

  • Play through Shadowbringers for free
  • No time limit
  • No subscription required

Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition

  • Includes content through Shadowbringers
  • Removes the Free Trial restrictions

  • Game price: $19.99
  • Subscription fee varies by region

Final Fantasy XIV Online Complete Edition

  • Includes all content through the current expansion, Dawntrail
  • Requires an active monthly subscription

  • Subscription fee varies by region

Players who purchase the Starter Edition can later upgrade by purchasing the Dawntrail expansion for $39.99.

Players planning to play exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 will need a Switch 2 subscription.

Meanwhile, existing players already playing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC can continue using the same Square Enix account and add Nintendo Switch 2 support at a discounted 50% platform fee.

Square Enix also confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 players will share servers with every other platform through full cross-platform support. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) is not required to play the game.
