Microsoft Testing Smarter Xbox Downloads That Automatically Find the Fastest Servers
Microsoft has begun testing a new operating system update for Xbox that aims to significantly improve game download and installation speeds through a smarter server selection system.
Known as Smart Client, the new technology is currently available to members of the Xbox Insider Alpha Skip-Ahead program, giving Microsoft’s earliest testers access before a wider public rollout.
Automatically Finds the Fastest Server
The Smart Client system continuously analyzes Microsoft’s available download servers while a game is downloading.
Rather than sticking to a single download source, Xbox periodically measures the connection speed to multiple servers and automatically switches to whichever one offers the best performance at that moment.
The process repeats throughout the installation, allowing downloads to remain connected to the fastest available server in real time.
Designed for the Future of Digital Gaming
The feature arrives as game installation sizes continue to grow, with blockbuster releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI expected to require enormous downloads.
It also aligns with the industry’s ongoing transition toward digital game purchases instead of physical discs and could complement Microsoft’s future hardware initiatives, including the rumored Project Helix.
Addressing a Long-Standing Xbox Frustration
The new technology may also help reduce one of the most common complaints among Xbox users.
Currently, download speeds on Xbox Series consoles can drop noticeably if another game is running in the background. By continuously selecting the most efficient download route, Smart Client aims to reduce delays and improve overall download performance.
Microsoft notes that the feature remains in testing, and additional refinements are expected before it becomes available to all Xbox users.
If the rollout goes as planned, Smart Client could make downloading large digital games considerably faster and more reliable for Xbox players worldwide.
