PlayStation Fans Plan Global PS5 Protest Over Sony’s Digital-Only Direction

A growing movement within the PlayStation community is calling on players around the world to participate in a week-long protest against Sony Interactive Entertainment, following reports of the company’s long-term shift toward a fully digital gaming ecosystem.

Rather than targeting PlayStation’s online infrastructure, organizers say the protest is intended to send a message through player activity statistics that Sony closely monitors.

A Week-Long “Blackout”

According to organizers, PlayStation users are being encouraged to turn off their PS5 consoles or log out of PlayStation Network from August 23 through August 30, avoiding online activity for seven consecutive days.

The goal is to reduce active user numbers as a symbolic demonstration of dissatisfaction rather than disrupt PlayStation services.

Community Concerns Go Beyond Physical Games

In an online statement, organizers argued that Sony has gradually become more disconnected from its community over the years.

Among the concerns raised are:

• The reported move toward ending physical game releases by 2028.
• The closure of beloved studios, including Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games.
• A stronger focus on live-service titles.
• The discontinuation of PlayStation Experience events.
• Limited post-launch support for PlayStation VR2.

The group described the reported transition away from physical media as the “last straw,” adding that even if Sony were to reverse course on physical games, fans would still like to see the return of dormant franchises such as Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, and Resistance.

A Symbolic Show of Support

Organizers acknowledge that not every PlayStation owner will be able to participate due to work schedules or personal gaming commitments.

However, they believe temporarily stepping away from the platform—and refraining from spending on PlayStation services during the protest period—would send a stronger message than simply expressing frustration online.

Whether the movement gains significant participation remains to be seen, but many within the community will be watching closely to see if Sony responds to the planned demonstration.
