Resident Evil Requiem Promises Gameplay More Intense Than Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil Requiem Director Says Gameplay Surpasses Resident Evil 2
Capcom is preparing to unleash a new wave of terror with Resident Evil Requiem, the latest chapter in the iconic survival horror series. According to the director, the upcoming title will deliver a gameplay experience even more intense and terrifying than Resident Evil 2, long hailed as one of the franchise’s best installments.
Requiem Aims to “Upgrade” the Horror Formula
At Tokyo Game Show 2025, director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazama spoke with IGN about their vision for Resident Evil Requiem. They revealed that the core development philosophy is about “balancing” horror and action. After Resident Evil 7 successfully brought the series back to its survival horror roots, Resident Evil Village shifted toward a more action-oriented experience.
Nakanishi explained that focusing solely on action risks losing the essence of horror that defines the franchise, as seen with Resident Evil 5 and 6. Although those games were well-received, they were often criticized for no longer feeling like horror titles. With Requiem, the team is steering back toward the tone of Resident Evil 2 but with deeper atmosphere, more intense scares, and a heightened survival experience.
The story follows Grace Ashcroft, who will face horrifying new challenges. The development team admitted they were initially unsure whether the game’s terrifying moments would land as intended until players tried early builds at Summer Game Fest and Gamescom where overwhelmingly positive feedback reassured them.
A New Generation of Survival Horror
Resident Evil Requiem marks the ninth mainline entry in the series. The story centers on Grace, daughter of Alyssa, a journalist who survived the T-Virus outbreak in 1998. After Alyssa is mysteriously murdered, Grace must return to a nightmare-laden place from her past one that may hold long-buried secrets about a forgotten city.
The game is set to launch on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, promising to redefine survival horror once again.
