Final Fantasy VII Remake Was Almost Released as a Cloud Version on Switch 1

It has been half a decade since Final Fantasy VII Remake first launched, but excitement surrounding the iconic JRPG’s ambitious three-part remake remains strong. With the upcoming release on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, interest is high, especially since the game was once a PlayStation exclusive on PS4 and PS5.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Everything, producer Naoki Hamaguchi, who also directed the first installment, revealed that Square Enix once considered bringing Final Fantasy VII Remake to the original Nintendo Switch as a cloud version. This version would have relied on streaming servers, requiring a stable internet connection to play.

The idea was inspired by previous Square Enix titles like Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and 3, which were released on Switch as Cloud Editions. Although those versions received considerable attention despite requiring constant connectivity, the team ultimately decided that this approach was not suitable for Final Fantasy VII Remake. Once they saw the improved hardware capabilities of the Switch 2, they chose to create a native port instead.

It is interesting to imagine how things might have turned out if Square Enix had chosen the streaming route. However, cloud editions often face criticism over potential server shutdowns and long-term access issues. Physical distribution through Game Key Cards, which act as a form of DRM, has also sparked debate within the gaming community.
