Chrome Holds 71% Market Share as AI Features Struggle to Shift User Habits

Chrome Dominates Browser Market with 71% Share as AI Remains Just an Option

Google Chrome continues to reign supreme in the desktop browser market, securing a dominant 71.86% share as of October 1, 2025, according to StatCounter. This marks a 2.6-point increase from the previous month and sets a new all-time high, reinforcing Chrome’s position as the world’s go-to browser.

Despite ongoing criticism over its heavy resource consumption, users continue to prefer Chrome for its lightning-fast performance, seamless web compatibility, and deeply integrated Google sync ecosystem that ties devices and services together effortlessly.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Edge has seen its market share slip from 11.73% to 10.37%, even with its heavy investment in Copilot AI features. Apple Safari has slightly declined to 5.69%, and Mozilla Firefox has contracted further to 4.45%. Opera experienced a small uptick to 2.11%, but the numbers highlight Chrome’s overwhelming dominance, leaving its competitors struggling to gain ground.

The broader browser landscape in 2025 shows a clear shift toward AI integration. Chrome now includes Gemini and an AI-powered content summarization mode, Edge offers Copilot Mode for tasks like email writing, and Opera has launched Neon, a subscription-based AI browser. However, these advancements underscore a crucial reality: while AI is shaping the future of browsing, it remains just one of many features and Chrome’s unmatched user base proves that speed, reliability, and compatibility still matter most.
