Exclusive Interview: Octopath Traveler 0 Producer on Story, Freedom, and Building Your Own Adventure

[Exclusive Interview] Inside Octopath Traveler 0 with Producer Hirohito Suzuki

A deep dive into the newest chapter of the series, set before the events of the original Octopath Traveler.

Octopath Traveler 0 will be a true JRPG offline game experience with a new concept that allows us to create our own adventure characters in a magical world.

Q: Octopath Traveler 0 allows players to recruit over 30 characters. How did the team balance such a large roster?

A: Compared to Champions of the Continent, the number of recruitable characters is roughly the same. However, we introduced new action skills, perks, and unique features that give each character their own personality and playstyle. This individuality was a core focus during development.

Q: The game is often compared to Champions of the Continent. How is Octopath Traveler 0 different?

A: While we referenced many elements from Champions of the Continent, Octopath Traveler 0 was developed as a console-first experience, so the gameplay feels very different. The biggest surprise is that the player becomes the central character, shaping their own story. That freedom makes the experience feel fresh and deeply personal.

Q: Since players create their own character, how did you ensure emotional depth and connection with the story?

A: The story begins with a peaceful town being destroyed, creating the initial conflict. The protagonist is mostly silent, speaking rarely, which allows players to feel their inner resentment. At the same time, their actions, like rebuilding the town and gathering survivors, create a strong sense of identity and emotional attachment.

Q: The recruited characters are not directly connected to each other. How did you approach this challenge?

A: Yes, the party can include over 30 members compared to the original eight. Managing those relationships was a major consideration. Since the main character is created by the player, they become the core that ties everyone together. Players might meet new allies in taverns, restaurants, or on the road. Features like shared training sessions also help build bonds between characters.

Q: As a prequel to the first two games, is there a specific order you recommend playing them in?

A: Not really. You can start with any game in the series. Since Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel, it’s perfectly fine to jump in without prior knowledge. It takes place in the same world of Orsterra, so fans may notice interesting connections. Players from Champions of the Continent will also see many differences. While it might seem smaller in scale, the goal was to create a long-lasting, enjoyable experience.

Q: Around 40 to 50 percent of the story content is said to come from Champions of the Continent. How did you choose what to include?

A: The core idea was that the player is the protagonist. We started with that foundation, then expanded with additional mid-game elements like city-building and new narrative arcs. Even after finishing the main story, there’s more to do. Overall, the game offers over 100 hours of content, far exceeding CoC.

Q: Are there any accessibility features to help new players enjoy the game?

A: The game is designed to be straightforward and approachable. Players start by creating their traveler, then follow story quests or simply live out their RPG adventure. Leveling, dungeon exploration, and boss battles naturally follow, ensuring a smooth progression for all types of players.

Q: Speaking of freedom, how much freedom does the game offer players?

A: I can’t reveal too much that would be a spoiler (laughs). But rest assured, there’s a lot to do.

Q: Can you explain more about the city-building system and why it’s an important feature?

A: The more effort you put into rebuilding the town, the more it benefits your journey. It’s entirely optional you can wait until the endgame or focus on it early. But rebuilding unlocks bonuses that help during your adventure. There’s also a cooking system that grants buffs, like automatic HP regeneration during battles. You can farm, train skills, and unlock many features by developing your town.

Q: Finally, do you have a message for fans in Asia?

A: Thank you to all the players in Asia. We’re thrilled to finally reveal this project. You’ll once again explore the world of Orsterra, just like the travelers from the original game. Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer, we hope you’ll enjoy this new adventure. And we’d love to see your city-building creations shared online. Also, players with save data from Octopath Traveler I or II will receive special items and decorations in Octopath Traveler 0!
