Why FF17 Won’t Be a Turn Based RPG

Final Fantasy XVII Unlikely to Revert to Turn Based

A debate continues among fans regarding the combat system. This surrounds the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XVII. Despite this, Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Director Naoki Hamaguchi offered his perspective. Hamaguchi suggests the mainline series will not return to a traditional turn-based system. This comes even after the success of games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. That game proved there is still significant global interest. It showed demand for turn based RPGs remains strong. However, Hamaguchi believes that game’s success will “not influence the direction” of the Final Fantasy series in the future.

Combat Style Follows Director’s Vision

In an interview with The Gamer website. Hamaguchi was directly asked about the future combat system. He was questioned about the possibility of Square Enix returning to turn based battles. This came in light of the popularity of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He provided a very clear answer for players.

“This is a fascinating question,” Hamaguchi responded directly. He noted the recent trends in the main series. “As you mentioned, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI are both primarily action based battle systems.” He then provided the key insight into the future of the series. “Generally, the battle system of each main Final Fantasy installment depends on the decision of its individual director.” Therefore, he concluded, “it is not yet definitively determined” whether the next game will be a full action game or a turn based title.

Focus Remains on Fan Experience

Hamaguchi further elaborated on his reasoning. He stated that he does not see the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as a guiding factor. It will not determine the course of future Final Fantasy games. He stressed the most crucial element for the developers. The most important thing is delivering an experience. That experience must be something “fans will enjoy the most.” This is more important than adhering strictly to any single combat style or established genre. The development approach prioritizes player enjoyment. This philosophy ensures the game remains highly relevant for players across the globe.
