A new Sword Art Online game titled Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online has officially been revealed, and one of its most talked about features is a brutal permadeath mode that deletes a player’s save file immediately upon defeat.
The game is being published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, and it aims to recreate the tension of the original Sword Art Online storyline where players are trapped inside a virtual world.

Echoes of Aincrad is an open world action RPG where players create their own character and become one of the thousands of players trapped inside the game world of Aincrad.
Just like the story in the anime, players must explore the world, complete quests, battle monsters, and work together with other players to clear the game and return to the real world.
The game allows players to equip powerful swords, perform coordinated combat skills with partners, and explore a large fantasy world filled with dangers.
Death Game Mode introduces permadeath
The newly confirmed Death Game Mode introduces one of the most extreme mechanics seen in a Sword Art Online game.
In this mode, if the player loses a battle, the game will delete the save file permanently. There are no retries, no checkpoints, and no second chances.
This feature mirrors the core concept of Sword Art Online where losing inside the game means losing everything.
Players who purchase the Deluxe Edition or Ultimate Edition will gain early access to Death Game Mode. Those who purchase the Standard Edition will still be able to unlock the mode after completing the main story.
Release schedule for multiple platforms
Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S on July 9, followed by the PC version on July 10 through Steam.
