Starsand Island Removed from Steam After Copyright Issue
What should have been a promising start for Starsand Island has suddenly turned into a major setback. The newly released farming and slow-life title from Seed Sparkle Lab, often compared to Stardew Valley, has been removed from Steam shortly after launch due to a copyright-related problem.
The developer has now addressed the situation publicly, admitting that the issue came from what it described as a mistake during the planning process. According to the team, certain visual elements from a “classic game” were used in one of the mini-games without proper permission. While no specific title was officially named, many players in the community believe the content in question may have resembled Tetris, particularly in the arcade-style mini-game section.
Rather than avoiding responsibility, the studio responded quickly and directly. The team confirmed that all problematic content has already been removed from the game, and a revised build has been submitted to Steam for review. If the updated version is approved, Starsand Island is expected to return to sale on the platform as soon as possible.
To make amends, the developers also announced a free apology gift for players in the form of the Shining Star Outfit Set DLC. It is a small gesture, but one clearly meant to show goodwill after the disruption caused by the takedown.
For players who already purchased the game, there is at least some good news. The developer stated that the game remains playable for existing owners, and save data will remain fully intact. The upcoming fix will not erase progress, which should come as a relief to anyone who already invested time into the game.
The incident is a sharp reminder of how even a seemingly minor piece of borrowed content can create major consequences, especially on a platform as large as Steam. For indie developers in particular, small oversights in visual design or asset usage can quickly snowball into release delays, reputational damage, and lost momentum.
For now, anyone who had Starsand Island on their wishlist will need to wait until the Steam page returns. As for existing players, they can at least look forward to a free cosmetic set once the situation is fully resolved.
