Ex-Valve Writer Slams Epic Games Layoffs

Ex-Valve Writer Chet Faliszek Heavily Criticizes Tim Sweeney Over Massive Epic Games Layoffs
Chet Faliszek, the veteran writer renowned for his legendary work at Valve, has publicly and fiercely criticized Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney via a recent TikTok video. The criticism centers around Epic’s decision to lay off over 1,000 employees. Faliszek pointedly noted that because Epic Games is not a publicly traded company forced to appease shareholders or manipulate stock market figures, the massive wave of layoffs was a direct, personal decision made by Sweeney himself—a move Faliszek described as heartbreaking for the dedicated developers who poured their hearts into the studio’s projects.
A Lack of Ownership and Stability
Faliszek raised a highly compelling question: Why do employees at Epic Games continue to work so relentlessly when they possess absolutely no decision-making power or true ownership over their creations?
He highlighted the severe instability surrounding the company’s side projects, specifically pointing to Fortnite sub-modes like Rocket Racing and the Festival Battle Stage. To put the sheer scale of the situation into perspective, Faliszek noted that the number of people Epic recently laid off is actually larger than Valve’s entire total workforce. He criticized Sweeney for transitioning from a passionate game developer into an executive solely focused on squeezing as much money as possible out of a single game, directly comparing him to Valve boss Gabe Newell, who he believes handles leadership much better.
The Valve Difference: Respect and Empowerment
Drawing from his extensive experience working at Valve, Faliszek explained exactly why legendary employees have chosen to stay with the company since the Half-Life era.
He clarified that their loyalty was not simply bought with massive financial bonuses—though he admitted those bonuses allowed him to comfortably retire today. Instead, the true secret to Valve’s retention is that the company grants its employees absolute decision-making power and a profound sense of ownership over their work. This environment naturally drives developers to continuously improve their projects because they know their contributions are deeply meaningful and they are respected as actual creators.
Industry Failures and Misplaced Blame
Faliszek expanded his critique to the wider gaming industry, comparing Epic’s situation to massive publishers like EA. He pointed out the toxic industry trend of handing developers their termination notices immediately after they successfully ship a massive project (such as Battlefield 6), even if the game actively crushes its competition.
He argued that this callous behavior severely destroys employee morale. Even worse, these massive corporations often turn around and blame Western developers for being “lazy,” when in reality, it is the companies’ own toxic structures that drain their employees’ potential from day one.

Poor Business Decisions at Epic
The famous writer expressed deep regret that almost all of the incredibly talented and trustworthy people he once knew at Epic Games have either left or been forced out, leaving only a small handful alongside Sweeney himself. Faliszek questioned how any studio could possibly build a strong, lasting foundation without mutual trust.
Furthermore, he openly criticized what he views as Epic’s completely misguided business decisions. He pointed to the confusing acquisition of Bandcamp and the subsequent, aggressive price hikes for Fortnite’s V-Bucks (ranging from roughly 300 to 3,000 THB depending on the package) as desperate attempts to stabilize revenue—efforts that ultimately failed to prevent the massive layoffs anyway.
In his final conclusion, Faliszek firmly stated that he would never work in an environment that fails to honor and appropriately reward the sheer dedication of its workforce. He emphasized that genuine pride in one’s work and receiving proper recognition are the ultimate driving forces that allow game developers to create truly innovative experiences. Epic Games’ recent actions, he argues, should serve as a massive, costly lesson for the entire gaming industry to seriously reevaluate employee welfare and the true value of its creators.
