Neowiz’s Shape of Dreams Surpasses 1 Million Global Sales
Neowiz has announced that Shape of Dreams, the action roguelite title developed by Lizard Smoothie and published by Neowiz, has officially surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide.
Released on September 11 last year, Shape of Dreams reached 500,000 copies sold within just two weeks of launch. Momentum continued throughout the end of the year, and as of December 31, the game achieved the milestone of 1 million cumulative sales in approximately three and a half months. With this achievement, Neowiz now holds its second global indie million seller following the success of Skul.
Unique Gameplay Drives Global Success
A major factor behind the game’s strong performance is its distinctive gameplay design. Shape of Dreams combines fast paced roguelite action with MOBA inspired combat mechanics, creating dynamic and highly responsive encounters. The game also supports real time cooperative play for up to four players, a feature that has resonated strongly with global audiences.
The dream themed setting further enhances replayability. Each run features constantly changing stages and over 150 item combinations, allowing players to create new character builds every time they play. This variety has been widely praised for keeping the experience fresh and engaging.
Strong Critical and Player Reception
Critical and user reception played a key role in sustaining the game’s momentum. Shape of Dreams earned scores of 84 on Metacritic and 86 on OpenCritic, reflecting strong approval from industry reviewers. On Steam, the game continues to maintain a Very Positive user rating, helping establish a dedicated and growing global fanbase.
Community Focused Development
Ongoing communication with players has also been cited as a key success factor. From its demo phase prior to launch, the development team actively gathered feedback from global players and incorporated it into the final release. After launch, the game received rapid balance adjustments and continuous service updates.
In December, a major update introduced Workshop style user created content, along with new challenge elements such as Hard Mode and hidden bosses. These additions were met with strong positive responses from the community.
From Small Indie Team to Global Milestone
Lizard Smoothie was founded by CEO Shim Eunseop and Director Kang Gipyo, two engineering students who joined forces to form a small indie development team. The studio gained early recognition after winning a Gold Award at a global indie game competition in 2023. Through determination and a strong focus on core gameplay fun, the team successfully overcame the limitations of a small studio to deliver a global hit.
A Neowiz representative stated that the game’s worldwide success was made possible by the support of fans around the globe, adding that the company plans to continue long term IP management while leveraging its global publishing capabilities to further expand the franchise.
With Shape of Dreams reaching this major milestone, Neowiz reinforces its position as a key player in the global indie publishing space, while demonstrating the continued strength of high quality indie titles across the SEA region and beyond.
