Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and GTA PSP Games Still Recorded Sales in the Past Year

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and GTA Still Recorded PSP Sales Last Year
Although Sony has largely stepped away from the dedicated handheld gaming market, aside from experimental streaming devices like the recently released PlayStation Portal, its first official portable console, the PlayStation Portable or PSP, appears to be gaining renewed attention in 2026. Among Gen Z users, the PSP has resurfaced as a stylish multimedia device that still feels functional today, much like the Nintendo DS, supported by a small but passionate cult following.
This renewed interest has led to an unexpected discovery in recent sales data.
At Least One New PSP Game Was Sold
Game industry analyst and reporter Mat Piscatella revealed via his BlueSky social media account that during the past year, at least one brand-new PSP game copy was sold. While the number may sound insignificant, it is enough to be officially recorded in retail sales tracking systems.
Two notable titles were confirmed to have sold at least one new copy each. These were Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars and Monster Hunter Freedom Dual Pack, which bundles two popular Monster Hunter entries. In addition, several PlayStation 2 titles also recorded single-copy sales, including games such as Gradius and Kingdom Hearts.
New Copies From Old Stock
What makes this situation particularly interesting is that these games were classified as new and unopened. This strongly suggests that they were unsold stock that remained in storage for many years before finally being purchased. Once sold through retail channels, these transactions are logged and become part of official industry reports.
This raises an intriguing question about the buyers. Were these copies purchased to be played on original hardware, added to a personal collection, or acquired for resale at higher prices in the retro market.
A Hidden Opportunity for Collectors
For players and collectors interested in owning rare physical copies of classic games, this serves as a reminder that hidden inventory may still exist. Local game shops and long-established retailers may still hold forgotten stock, making it worth asking or exploring lesser-known stores in search of unexpected finds.
A Brief Look Back at the PSP Legacy
The PlayStation Portable was first released in 2004 and stood out as a powerful handheld system for its time. It offered multimedia features such as video playback, music support, internet connectivity, and the ability to play PlayStation 1 titles.
The console went on to sell over 80 million units worldwide and received four revised hardware models throughout its lifespan. The PSP remained on the market alongside the PlayStation 2 and continued into the early PlayStation 3 era, securing its place as one of Sony’s most iconic gaming devices.
