Resident Evil Celebrates 30 Years with Green Herb Evolution Video

Resident Evil continues its 30th anniversary celebration with a special video highlighting the evolution of one of its most iconic items, the green herb.
Titled “30 Years of Green Herbs”, the video showcases how this classic healing item has appeared and evolved across multiple entries in the series, from the original game to the latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem.
An Icon That Stood the Test of Time
The green herb has been a staple of the Resident Evil franchise since the very beginning. Used by players to restore health, it may seem like a simple item, but it has played a crucial role in survival throughout the series.
While its base function remains consistent, restoring a small amount of health, its effectiveness can be greatly enhanced when combined with other herbs, making it a key strategic element in gameplay.
Different Forms Across the Series
Although the core function stays the same, some entries introduced unique variations:
- In Resident Evil 5, herbs can be converted into spray form
- In Umbrella Chronicles, herbs are used automatically upon pickup
- In Resident Evil VII, healing is less effective unless combined with chemicals
These variations demonstrate how Capcom continues to evolve even the most basic mechanics while keeping their identity intact.
A Journey Through the Franchise
The anniversary video features footage spanning the entire series, offering fans a nostalgic look at how the green herb has visually and functionally changed over time.
It also reflects how small gameplay elements can become enduring symbols within a long-running franchise.
