PS5 mod breakthrough runs GTA 5 with ray tracing

PS5 modder turns console into Linux PC running GTA 5 with ray tracing

A well known modder has successfully transformed a PlayStation 5 into a Linux powered system capable of running PC software and even modern games with advanced graphics features.

The experiment quickly went viral among gaming communities after the modder demonstrated Grand Theft Auto V running smoothly with ray tracing enabled and a stable 60 frames per second.

Famous hacker installs Linux on PS5

The breakthrough was achieved by security researcher Andy Nguyen, widely known online as theflow0. He managed to install the open source operating system Linux directly onto the console.

Rather than simply booting into a command line environment, Nguyen demonstrated the system running full graphical workloads and modern games.

His demo featured the Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced Edition, complete with ray tracing effects and smooth performance.

Exploit bypasses Sony security

The process required exploiting a vulnerability known as Byepervisor, which allowed the modder to bypass the security protections implemented by Sony.

This exploit grants kernel level access to the hardware, effectively allowing the console to behave like a standard PC where the operating system can directly control the CPU, GPU, and system resources.

According to Nguyen, core hardware features continued working normally, including:

• 4K video output through HDMI
• functional USB ports
• external peripheral support

This means the modified system behaves similarly to a small Linux gaming computer.

Performance tuning for stability

During testing, Nguyen configured the console hardware with stable operating clocks.

The CPU was tuned to run at 3.2 GHz, while the GPU operated at 2.0 GHz. Although the hardware could theoretically reach higher speeds of 3.5 GHz for the CPU and 2.23 GHz for the GPU, pushing the console to those limits caused overheating issues on the PS5 Slim used in the experiment.

For safety and stability, the clocks were reduced to maintain reliable performance during gaming tests.

Only older PS5 firmware can run the hack

Unfortunately, this modification cannot be replicated on most modern consoles.

The exploit only works on very early firmware versions of the PS5, specifically versions around 1.xx to 2.xx. These systems have not received firmware updates for several years.

Most players who update their consoles regularly to access online services will not be able to run the modification because Sony has already patched the vulnerability in later updates.

Downgrading firmware is also extremely difficult and generally not possible for most users.

A glimpse of the PS5 hardware’s hidden power

The experiment highlights how powerful the PS5 hardware can be when freed from its standard console environment.

With the right software access, the system can function similarly to a compact gaming PC capable of running demanding titles with advanced graphics features.

For modding enthusiasts and hardware hackers, this development could mark the beginning of more experiments involving custom software, alternative operating systems, and deeper console modifications in the future.
