While Ghost of Yōtei has now officially launched, one passionate fan in Japan couldn’t wait for release day. In a remarkable tribute to the franchise, “Chemical Yoshino,” an editor from the renowned gaming magazine Famitsu, decided to fly to Hokkaido and climb the real Mount Yōtei before the game’s release treating it as a real-life achievement unlocked.
From Ghost of Tsushima to Ghost of Yōtei
In his article for Famitsu, Yoshino shared that his motivation came from a deep admiration for Sucker Punch Productions’ latest project. This sequel departs from the island of Tsushima and takes players north to the historical region of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), immersing them in a new era and environment.
Ghost of Yōtei is an open-world historical action-adventure set in 1603, centered on a new protagonist named Atsu, who seeks vengeance in a vast, untamed northern Japan. The game continues the series’ legacy of stunning historical backdrops and cinematic artistry, blending ancient Japanese culture with the raw beauty of Hokkaido’s natural landscapes.
Mount Yōtei, a majestic peak rising above sweeping plains, serves as a significant landmark and symbolic heart of the game’s world, representing peace and the strength of nature within Ezo. Sucker Punch meticulously crafted its depiction to capture the mountain’s power and serenity through visuals, sound, and atmosphere.
For Yoshino, climbing Mount Yōtei was more than just a trip it was a personal achievement he wanted to complete before stepping into the digital version of the mountain.
Originally announced in 2024, Ghost of Yōtei expands the beloved franchise with a fresh story, new characters, and a vast new region to explore. Taking place 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, the standalone narrative follows Atsu, a lone mercenary on a path of revenge, as she journeys through northern Japan’s breathtaking yet unforgiving landscapes to hunt down those responsible for her family’s murder.
With its ambitious scale, deeper storytelling, and powerful emotional themes, Ghost of Yōtei promises to deliver an unforgettable samurai epic one that some fans are already living out in the real world.
