Ghost of Yōtei Dev: “We Don’t Care How You Play, As Long As You’re Having Fun”

Ghost of Yōtei Dev Says Player Freedom Matters More Than How You Play
The buzz surrounding Ghost of Yōtei remains strong following its recent exclusive launch on PS5. One of the most talked-about elements among fans is the game’s near-limitless freedom of play. Jason Connell, Creative Director of the development team, recently reaffirmed that the game was designed for players to experience it their own way. Whether they choose to follow the main quest, explore the vast open-world version of Hokkaido, or simply enjoy the scenery, the only thing that matters is that they are having fun.
Freedom Is at the Heart of Ghost of Yōtei
Connell explained in an interview with GamesRadar that the core goal behind Ghost of Yōtei was to create an experience where players control the pace and direction of their journey. “If a player doesn’t want to do a certain thing in the game, we just say, ‘That’s fine, that’s your choice,’” he said. “As long as you’re enjoying the game, that’s all we care about.”
Although Ghost of Yōtei is a large-scale first-party project that required significant time and resources, Connell confirmed that the team is not concerned about players potentially missing certain content. Their guiding principle is that “player freedom comes first.”
“Our philosophy is to give you more freedom than any game has ever offered,” Connell added, emphasizing that the world of Ghost of Yōtei is built to feel naturally interconnected. Every side activity, random encounter, and point of interest is designed to draw players into exploration without making them feel forced into specific tasks.
A Living, Breathing Open World
Critics have praised Ghost of Yōtei for its world design, describing it as “alive” and “organic” compared to many modern open-world games that often overwhelm players with repetitive missions or cluttered maps. Instead, Yōtei encourages exploration through its breathtaking landscapes, dynamic weather changes, and ambient storytelling delivered through surrounding characters.
From both player and developer perspectives, Ghost of Yōtei is a prime example of an open-world game that offers “meaningful freedom” rather than just a vast space to wander. The game reacts dynamically to player choices, whether it’s the path they take, how they approach enemies, or decisions to help villagers. There is no strictly defined “right” or “wrong” way to play.
Many players also agree that the game’s greatest strength is not just in its visuals or narrative but in the sense of “owning” a unique experience that differs for everyone. Some spend hours hunting enemies deep in the forests, while others focus on capturing stunning views of Mount Yōtei’s landscapes.
First revealed in 2024, Ghost of Yōtei promises to deliver a fresh chapter in the acclaimed series with new characters, a gripping story, and an expanded region of Japan to explore. Set 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, this standalone adventure follows a lone mercenary named Atsu on a personal quest for revenge as she journeys through the harsh and beautiful wilderness of northern Japan, seeking those responsible for her family’s murder.
