Google Expands Gemini with Shared Gems Feature

Google has rolled out a major update to Gemini, allowing users to share Gems, the customizable AI assistants designed for specific tasks. Previously limited to Gemini Advanced subscribers, the feature is now available to everyone with a personal or Workspace account, making Gemini’s capabilities more collaborative and versatile.

Originally launched last year, Gems let users build personalized AI assistants or use pre-made ones created by Google, such as a learning coach, career guide, writing editor, and coding assistant. However, until now, there was no way to share user-created Gems or access Gems made by others. With the new update, users can easily share their assistants in just a few clicks.

Sharing works through the familiar Google Drive system. In the ‘My Gems’ section on the Gemini web app, users can select the share button next to the edit icon. From there, they can share via email or link. Recipients will see a dedicated chat screen marked as a shared Gem, with a note that commands may be altered. Shared Gems will appear in a “Shared with me” section within the Gem manager, and users can copy or edit instructions for their own use.

Behind the scenes, the system automatically creates a new Gemini Gems folder in Google Drive, where each file carries the Gemini icon and links directly to the assistant’s interface. This integration streamlines collaboration, reduces repetitive work, and ensures consistency within teams.

By making Gems shareable and deeply integrated with Google Drive, Gemini strengthens its position as a serious competitor in the AI assistant space. The move highlights Google’s intent to make its ecosystem more interconnected, appealing both to personal users and organizations that value efficiency and seamless teamwork.
