Microsoft Rolls Out Windows 11 25H2 Update with Extended Support and Subtle New Features

Microsoft has officially rolled out Windows 11 version 25H2, also known as the Windows 11 2025 Update, and it is now available for free through Windows Update. Users running Windows 11 can check for updates in Settings and install the latest version immediately. This update focuses on extending support life, improving security, and adding a few small but significant features to keep the system modern and efficient.

Windows 11 25H2 shares the same core codebase as version 24H2, meaning most features remain unchanged. The biggest highlight is the reset of support duration. Home and Pro editions will receive continuous support for 24 months, while Enterprise and Education editions will be supported for up to 36 months. This ensures users continue to receive security patches and updates for years to come.

For those already using version 24H2, upgrading to 25H2 is fast and straightforward via a lightweight Enablement Package that’s less than 200KB. Simply go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. Users on version 23H2 or earlier must first upgrade to 24H2 or use tools like the Installation Assistant, Media Creation Tool, or download the ISO directly from Microsoft.

New features introduced in 25H2 include support for Wi-Fi 7 on newer devices, the option to uninstall Microsoft Store apps through Group Policy, removal of PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC to simplify the system, and a new AI-assisted secure coding feature designed to help developers write more secure code. Although Microsoft has not yet revealed detailed information about the AI tools, they are expected to play a key role in future updates.

However, users should be aware of a few potential issues. Applications that use Enhanced Video Renderer together with DRM or HDCP may encounter black screen problems when playing DVDs or Blu-ray discs. Additionally, some devices may not yet see the update due to temporary compatibility blocks related to drivers or software.

Some features, such as the improved Start Menu, will roll out gradually and may not be available to all users at once. Microsoft advises checking device compatibility and backing up important data before updating to ensure a smooth upgrade experience and to take full advantage of Windows 11 25H2.
