Urgent Warning: Apple Urges Older iPhone Users to Update Immediately Against Coruna & DarkSword Malware
Apple has issued an urgent public alert for iPhone users running older versions of the iOS operating system, advising them to update their software as soon as possible.
This warning follows the discovery of widespread attacks utilizing highly dangerous exploit kits known as Coruna and DarkSword. These toolkits primarily target users through modified websites and online content. Security researchers have found that the Coruna exploit kit contains 23 different attack vectors specifically designed to breach vulnerabilities within the WebKit and Kernel of older iOS systems, spanning from iOS 13 all the way to iOS 17.2.1.
Initially, researchers from Google and iVerify believed these highly sophisticated tools were created by state-sponsored agencies for targeted espionage. However, the situation has escalated. These tools are now being widely deployed by everyday cybercriminals on the black market to conduct mass attacks, specifically aiming to steal cryptocurrency wallets and personal user data.
Which iOS Versions Are Safe?
Apple has clarified the security status across its operating systems. Here is what you need to do depending on your device:
- Newer Devices: Users running the latest iOS 26 are completely safe, as the vulnerabilities have already been patched in this current ecosystem.
- Older Devices: If your device cannot support the absolute latest OS, Apple strongly recommends updating to iOS 15.8.7 or iOS 16.7.15 to receive the necessary security protections.
- Legacy Devices (iOS 13 or 14): Apple urges users stuck on these versions to upgrade to iOS 15 immediately, as a Critical Security update is scheduled to be released for it in the coming days.
Alternative Protection: If you are in a high-risk group or cannot update your software immediately, Apple recommends enabling Lockdown Mode. This feature heavily restricts certain web technologies that the malware uses as an entry point into your phone.
