Google has announced a major update in its effort to enhance Android security, particularly regarding the installation of apps outside of the official Google Play Store. The new policy, introduced as part of the Android Developer Verifier, aims to ensure that apps being sideloaded onto devices come from verified developers, thereby helping to prevent the spread of malware and fake apps.
Starting in April 2026, Android users will begin to see the Android Developer Verifier as part of the Google services menu on their devices. By June 2026, the first group of users—including students and independent developers—will have access to limited distribution accounts. The system will gradually expand before reaching a significant milestone in August 2026, when Power Users worldwide will be able to use the Advanced Flow, a tighter security process for sideloading apps while retaining flexibility for those who need it.
The major shift will take place on September 30, 2026, when users in Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia, and Singapore will be required to ensure that all apps installed or updated on Android devices are registered by verified developers. If an app is not registered, it will need to be installed through ADB or the more complex Advanced Flow process to ensure the user’s safety.

Google has already begun the verification process for developers through the Play Console and the new Android Developer Console, which is specifically designed for those distributing apps outside of the Play Store. Developers who have already verified their identity with Google Play will not need to make significant changes, but should review their settings in the coming weeks.
This new policy will be enforced globally by 2027, though there is no set timeline for other countries outside of the initial test regions. The decision to begin the rollout in Southeast Asia and neighboring countries highlights the region’s importance as a testing ground for Google’s new security measures, which aim to reduce the growing problem of fraudulent apps and malware in these markets.
