Apple’s AI Leader John Giannandrea to Exit the Company
After eight years at Apple, John Giannandrea, the company’s Senior Vice President of AI Strategy, is set to leave this week, marking the end of a major chapter in Apple’s efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities.
Originally recruited from Google by CEO Tim Cook, Giannandrea was expected to lead a transformation of Siri and position Apple as a serious competitor in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
A Mission That Fell Short of Expectations
During his tenure, Giannandrea played a central role in the development of Apple Intelligence and the revamped Siri showcased at WWDC 2024. However, progress did not go as smoothly as anticipated.

Interestingly, Apple’s stance on AI has evolved over time. Some senior executives, including software chief Craig Federighi, were initially skeptical about the potential of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
That perspective reportedly changed after hands-on experience with AI-assisted coding, leading to stronger internal support for AI initiatives. Unfortunately for Giannandrea, this shift came late in his tenure.
Departure Tied to Stock Vesting Timeline
Sources suggest that April 15 marks the point when Giannandrea’s stock grants fully vest, which is believed to be a key reason for the timing of his departure.
Rather than joining another major tech company, he is expected to transition into a startup advisory role, exploring new challenges outside the corporate structure.
