Apple has officially introduced the latest generation of its popular lightweight laptop. The new MacBook Air M5 brings a major performance upgrade with the powerful M5 chip, stronger AI capabilities, and expanded storage options.
The updated MacBook Air keeps the familiar ultra thin aluminum design that made the series popular worldwide. The device is available in both 13 inch and 15 inch models. Color options include Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Silver.
One of the biggest changes is the upgraded base storage. The entry configuration now starts at 512GB, which doubles the capacity offered in previous entry level models. Users can also configure the device with up to 4TB of storage depending on their needs.
M5 chip focuses on AI performance
At the center of the new MacBook Air is the Apple M5 chip. The processor features a 10 core CPU that Apple describes as one of the fastest in its class. The new GPU architecture also introduces Neural Accelerators integrated across all cores.
This hardware upgrade significantly boosts AI processing. Apple states that AI workloads can run up to 9.5 times faster compared to devices powered by the M1 chip. These improvements allow smoother performance when using features from Apple Intelligence or running large language models directly on the device.
The chip also provides memory bandwidth reaching 153GB per second. This allows the laptop to handle heavy multitasking, fast app switching, and demanding workflows with improved efficiency.

Display, camera, and sound improvements
Entertainment and creative tasks benefit from the improved display and media features. The MacBook Air M5 uses a Liquid Retina display that reaches brightness levels of up to 500 nits.
A new 12MP Center Stage camera enhances video calls by automatically keeping users centered in the frame. The system also includes upgraded speakers that support spatial audio for a more immersive listening experience.
Battery life continues to be a strong point of Apple Silicon laptops. The MacBook Air M5 can last up to 18 hours on a single charge, allowing users to work throughout the day without carrying a charger.
Faster connectivity and modern workflow support
Connectivity has also been upgraded with the inclusion of the Apple N1 chip. This component supports Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, offering faster and more stable wireless performance.
The laptop includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, allowing users to connect external displays and accessories. The system can support up to two external monitors, which is particularly useful for productivity focused workflows.
The device runs on macOS Tahoe, the latest version of Apple’s operating system. The update brings more customization options and improved interface design.
According to John Ternus, the MacBook Air M5 balances high performance and portability. He noted that the new chip helps simplify modern workflows, especially those involving AI powered tasks.
The MacBook Air M5 13 inch model starts at about $1,020, while the 15 inch model starts at about $1,240. The laptop is expected to become available soon across retail channels.
