Survey shows fans support Sony keeping PlayStation games exclusive

A recent community survey suggests that many players support the idea of Sony reducing or even stopping the release of its first party titles on PC.

The discussion comes after reports that Sony may be reconsidering its long running strategy of porting major PlayStation games to PC platforms.

According to a poll conducted by Push Square, more than 70 percent of participants said they agree with the idea of limiting PC ports and keeping games exclusive to PlayStation 5.

Meanwhile, only around 22 percent of voters preferred Sony to continue bringing its games to PC.

Why some fans want PlayStation exclusives

Supporters of the exclusivity strategy believe it helps strengthen the PlayStation brand and encourages players to purchase Sony’s console.

Major upcoming titles such as Ghost of Yotei, Saros, and Marvel’s Wolverine could potentially remain console exclusive if Sony continues down this path.

For many PlayStation fans, exclusive titles have always been a core reason to choose the platform.

PC ports were once highly profitable

Sony’s earlier PC releases achieved impressive success. For example, Horizon Zero Dawn performed strongly when it launched on Steam.

Industry estimates suggest that Sony’s PC port strategy may have generated roughly 2.3 billion USD in revenue. Considering that porting costs are usually much lower than full game development, these releases were considered highly profitable.

However, recent releases appear to have experienced slower sales growth compared to the early wave of PC ports.

Competitive pressure in the gaming market

Another factor that may influence Sony’s strategy is the evolving hardware landscape.

Future devices such as potential Steam powered living room machines or hybrid gaming systems from competitors could allow players to access PC libraries from console style devices. If Sony continues releasing its games on PC, those titles could also become playable on competing hardware platforms.

Some analysts believe this could weaken the unique value of PlayStation consoles.

A long term strategy decision

Even though PlayStation 5 continues to perform well globally, maintaining strong exclusive titles remains a key pillar of Sony’s brand identity.

By focusing on exclusives, Sony may aim to reinforce the PlayStation ecosystem while preparing for future competition in the console market.

For now, the debate over PC ports versus exclusivity continues among players, developers, and analysts alike.
