Vivo Vision Discovery Edition: A Leap into Mixed Reality

Vivo has unveiled its first Mixed Reality (MR) headset, the Vision Discovery Edition, during its 30th-anniversary celebration in Dongguan, China. This launch marks Vivo’s entry into the immersive computing space, positioning the company as the first Chinese smartphone manufacturer to venture into MR technology.

Design and Comfort

The Vision Discovery Edition boasts a lightweight design, weighing just 398 grams and measuring 83 mm in height and 40 mm in thickness, making it 26% smaller than the industry average. To enhance comfort during extended use, the headset includes four sizes of light seals and eight foam padding options, ensuring a snug fit for various face shapes. The ergonomic design also features a dual-ring adjustable strap for improved stability.

Visual Experience

Equipped with dual 8K Micro-OLED displays, each offering a resolution of 3,840 × 3,552 pixels per eye, the Vision Discovery Edition delivers a cinematic viewing experience. The displays cover 94% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and maintain color accuracy with a DeltaE of less than 2. The headset provides a 180° panoramic field of view, reducing eye fatigue during prolonged use.

Performance and Features

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, the Vision Discovery Edition offers 2.5 times greater GPU performance and up to eight times better AI capabilities compared to its predecessor. The headset operates on Vivo’s OriginOS Vision, featuring intuitive gesture controls and 1.5° high-precision eye tracking. Users can interact with the device using fingertip gestures across 26 degrees of freedom and a vertical tracking range of 175°.

The Vision Discovery Edition supports various applications, including immersive gaming, productivity tasks, and entertainment. It enables users to project a virtual 120-inch cinema screen, stream live sports with multiple camera angles, and capture spatial photos and 3D videos when paired with compatible Vivo smartphones.

Market Position and Availability

Vivo positions the Vision Discovery Edition as a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro, offering similar features at a more accessible price point. The headset is currently available for pre-order at select Vivo Experience Stores in China, with plans to expand availability in the near future. Pricing details and international availability have not been disclosed.

Final Thoughts

The Vivo Vision Discovery Edition represents a significant step forward in the realm of mixed reality, combining advanced technology with user-centric design. By offering high-resolution displays, powerful performance, and intuitive controls, Vivo aims to make immersive computing more accessible to a broader audience. As the MR market continues to evolve, the Vision Discovery Edition sets a new benchmark for future devices in this space.
